If Bartoli wins Wimbledon...

... Amélie won't be the only other French player to win it after Suzanne Lenglen.

Intra-French competition has always been a great motivation for her.
She broke through after Mary's great year, and won her first "major" against Mary.

If Bartoli wins, that will wake her up.

Re: Bartoli - *eek*
I just finished watching the third set and she played amazing! She looked over-Redbulled and I have no idea how she'll fall asleep tonight, though. I may be wrong, but I think one of the reasons she is able to take the ball so early is that she never has to change her grip from forehand to backhand and viceversa. I mean she doesn't even have to add one hand. She looked like vintage Agassi! Well done. Now finish the job.

Do you think Amelie will be cheering her on though? or not? Amelie is a hero in France isn't she? are they fickle like us Brits or will they still love her if Bartoli wins?

I don't know... they'd probably say winning Wimbledon wasn't that much of a deal if even Bartoli won it.

So all the pressure would go back on Amélie's shoulders to do better and win more slams. To prove the French #1 once again.

I'm sure Amélie would react positively in public but in private, who knows. I think people would still love her in France, but perhaps they'd revamp criticism.

How old is Bartoli? *grumbles, looks it up* Huh.. early 20s. Not as young as I'd have guessed.

I think Amelie will still and always be France's sweetheart but I say venus will win

Wow..Venus just won the tournament but Bartoli clearly won the crowd. Very cool reception from centre court on Venus's 4th win.

I agree. The whole stadium was cheering for Marion. I felt a bit for Venus on that. After all she played a great match.

Last year Wimbledon got a taste of a polite, modest, unassuming Champion: a real throwback to the Golden Age, if you will. And the British public adored that. Amélie perfectly fit the bill of what a Champion should be, in the British mindset - and on top of that, she was the underdog, and therefore doubly to be cheered.

Maybe they sensed that Bartoli, even if she is younger and perhaps less mature, would be a whole heck of a lot closer to that than Williams.

*shrug*

I sure as heck was rooting for Marion.

I don't know which tv stations you guys were watching but the coverage I saw on the BBC showed the crowd giving Venus the biggest cheer.

I have to say I didn't notice anything about the crowd preferring anyone. They seemed to like Marion, but she is easy to like. But I was thinking more of the farmers' mkt, rather than the ceremony.
